Best Dance Longboards – Buyers Guide

So, what are the main features you should be looking out for in a dance longboard? Here’s what you need to know.

The Shape and Size of the Dancing Board

As a rule, dance longboards are longer. This gives you plenty of room to walk around without getting shoe bite. The most important metric to consider is the EFP – Effective Foot Platform which is the surface you’re able to stand on.

The wheelbase isn’t all that important on a dance longboard, contrary to popular opinion. Yes, it’s usually mentioned as a key feature, but generally, the wheelbase on longer decks are long enough, usually above 30” which makes the board slower to turn and makes it more flowy.

Many people that are into longboarding sometimes prefer smaller platforms for dancing. Usually, this can help to understand where you are on the deck which can sometimes make the dancing smoother.

Sadly, this means you have less room to walk on it, so you need to understand what you’re looking for specifically.

This is where drop-through decks come in. These types of longboards tent to have a larger EFP and are very stable so they work well for dancing as they ride lower to the ground. They aren’t resistant to pressure though.

Dancer longboards can sometimes have more of a kicktail or nose for shuvits or manuals. These types of longboards can also be heavier than normal longboards as a result of their wheelbase and length, and they’re made with more wood.

This is a good thing for dancing as it’ll help the boards roll much smoother and for a longer duration, even on terrain that isn’t even.

Concave and Flex

Usually, dance longboards are flatter than your average longboard, or they may have a tiny conclave. It’s handy to have a little conclave, as it makes it easier to position yourself on the board when doing things like spins and when you’re moving.

Alternatively, though, excessive conclave can make the board steer too much when you’re by the edge of the board. This can cause movements to be more janky.

Dancing longboards can also come in different forms, some with more flex than others. Having a decent amount of flex can aid in longer carves and can make the ride much smoother. As with conclaves, too much can be troublesome to balance when you’re in the middle of doing a trick.

If you do prefer to mix up freestyle and dancing tricks, you could be better suited to a stiffer board as this will have more pop. More flex would mean softer landing. It really does come down to what you need in a longboard

Bamboo decks usually have more flex, but maple boards tend to be stiffer. Also, consider your own body mass as that can determine the type of board you should be using.

Trucks and Wheels

As you get more experienced in dance longboarding, you may want deeper and faster carving trucks. When you’re first starting out you’re better off getting a longboard with looser trucks that are still stable. This will give you a little wiggle room when it comes to error.

You should really be looking for a board with an RKP of 180mm, 50 degree trucks. You should also look for a board with soft bushings that are compliant with your own weight.

Heavier wheels can be better for more flatland tricks because they roll for a lot longer than a lot of other wheels on just one push. Wide contact patches can make the wheel stable Ideally, the board needs to be constantly moving and carving while you try to do the dance tricks.

Wheels that are softer are also handy for dancing freestyle and doing manoeuvres. With that being said, 80A wheels would be great for higher grip and stability. If you would rather sliding, wheels with a higher durometer will be much easier to help you slide easily on a bigger board.

Small wheels are also a little better for deep carving while you dance, as this can help you to avoid wheel bite.

Though this isn’t as important as some of the other aspects on the list, it’s only natural that you’d want a board that really makes your longboard dancing that much better! It’s what’s on the inside that counts, but looking good can certainly help and psychologically can make it a bit of a better experience for you.

Safety first! As with anything with wheels, it’s important to make sure you have the proper equipment to allow you to stop. There are a couple of different types of breaks and the type on your board can massively depend on the board you choose and the manufacturer. You could have an air break which helps stop the wheels by the use of the wind, and this can be done from certain body positions. Otherwise, there’s also the sit break which will require you to stop the board in a sitting position that puts pressure on the board and requires better balance.

How difficult is dance longboarding?

It’s difficult at first, but with practice you’ll get better. It’s a bit like learning to swim or riding a bike. You need to learn the correct techniques in order to properly do it. Practice makes perfect so the more you do it the better you’ll get.

How long are dance longboards?

They’re usually roughly 84cm, but they can go all the way up to 150cm. This, of course, depends on the manufacturer, as some can also be as thick as 25.4cm.

How do I need to know to choose a dancing longboard deck?

We’ve covered a lot of this above, but you should really make sure that the longboard is durable. It needs to be able to support your weight adequately, otherwise, it will just break. This should be one of your biggest priorities.
